The ancient kingdom of Lydia, where the first coins were made, tested its gold and silver on a black stone.
Assayers rubbed the metal across it and compared the streak with needles of known purity, and the truth showed. That Lydian stone has judged precious metal for some 2,500 years.
Medieval England made testing the law. Silver traded in every market, yet no one could judge its purity by eye. In 1238, Henry III ruled that silver offered for sale must match the coin of the realm, and appointed six goldsmiths to enforce it. Later laws required that no silver leave the workshop until it had been assayed and marked as meeting the sterling standard. Anything that fell short was broken and forfeited.
The rule hasn't changed in seven centuries. Don't fix it after it leaves. Prove it before it goes.
But that rule never made it to healthcare billing
Most billing runs backwards. Claims go out, payers deny them, and practices spend weeks reworking, resubmitting and appealing. Denials become a cost of doing business, and the testing happens after the claim has left, when it costs the most.
We work like the goldsmiths. Every claim is checked against the payer's own requirements: the codes, the rules, the documentation and the attachments. Only claims that pass go out. Anything that falls short is fixed here, before it reaches the payer.
